Raised Bed – Part 5 – Lined Up and New Seeds

Today I got out into the garden much earlier since I won’t be able to this evening. I used some connectors and screwed the wood together, I didn’t get a chance to screw it on to the bed though as the rain came.

I am very impressed with how it is looking though and can’t wait to put it in.

I have also received my seeds back that I ordered from Premier Seeds Direct and Lawn UK

The ones from Premier Seeds Direct are the White Clover that I will be using for Green Manure.

The Seeds from Lawn UK are a mixture of wildflower, specially mixed for Bumble Bees.

Both sets of seeds cost me 99p delivered and I will be testing them out tomorrow.

Also tomorrow I will be putting the raised bed together and putting it into place, leaving just the soil sieving and getting hold of manure.

Raised Bed – Part 4 – Nearing Completion

After having a lovely fathers day, with a lovely card and lots of presents, I didn’t plan to go out in the garden today but at 5:40pm, I had two choices. Stay in and watch Star Wars or pop out and carry on putting the raised bed together. I chose the raised bed.

After about an hour this is how the stands –

I also don’t need to find another plank either, the cut offs from the other planks, once connected together will be more than big enough for the missing section, so I am happy with that.

As promised yesterday, this is where the rubble from the raised bed area is going, down the gap in the fence, to try and fill up the hole between the gardens.

Also looking between the fence, I found this smaller fence, so at some point the current fence is coming off and I will re-attach them in a much better way, so that they are much tighter, leaving more garden free.

All in all, I am happy with the progress today, I love seeing things come together. Just got to continue sifting through the dirt and get hold of manure.

Raised Bed – Part 3 and Sieving

So after yet another rainy start to the day, I didn’t get out into the garden until 5pm. Also today I got my father to bring down all the wood for the raised beds, along with the tools required for the job. Also these photos are taken with the ipad, I normally use my phone, a Sony Xperia S.

Unfortunately there is only enough scaffolding to do the back, front and one side. So will need to source another plank. A nice picture of the pro layout I used to get measurements.

This is all I got done of the bed though, the drill I was using died so had to put it on charge then decided to move on to the hard part – Sieving.

Here is the setup I had going, the sieve placed over the bucket and just kept going until the missus called me in for food.

The green bucket is the rubble taken from the ground, This will be used in all the gaps in the fence, I will get photos of this tomorrow. The yellow bucket, pure dirt with any worms that came out to visit.

Since tomorrow is fathers day, I doubt I will be out in the garden at all, so will at least make up some plans.

Raised Bed – Part 2

After another very bad start to the day, I thought the garden was off the cards today. To my great surprise, at about 2:00pm the sun came out for a visit, it even got warm too.

So here is how the area started off –

And after about 2 hours of digging this was the end result –

These are some of the larger stones I dug up from the raised bed section, quite surprised at what was down there in all honesty.

In all I took 3 buckets of rubble up to the recycling plant, as they where to small for me to use again.

There will be an area behind the raised bed that |I will block off from the dog and build up as an insectopia.

Tomorrow is going to involve me sieving the area to get rid of as much glass and slate as I can, don’t want a cut hand in the future. The wood for the raised beds are lined up and just waiting for my father to deliver them to me.

The only other thing for the bed then is manure, since the dirt is poor I need to find someone local to get it from, so that will be my aim for next week.

Semi-Productive Day

So today I had an accident, Sliced my finger open putting together the greenhouse I bought, so couldn’t get my had dirty.

On a happier note, I bought a few plants, listed below –

  • JalapeƱo Pepper
  • Sweet Pepper
  • Grape Vine
  • Salad Lettuce
  • Strawberry Child Grow Kit
  • Lavender
  • Mint
  • Plus a few pack of seeds.

Sorry for the vagueness but its now too dark to go back out and check, so I will do it first thing in the morning and post the proper names up, along with some pictures.

Also I took some measurements for the shed end of the garden and will hopefully continue the planning late into tonight.

I will also post a picture of the garden in the state of when we first moved into the house.

The Shed – Planning Stages

Upon looking at the garden I have decided the first thing to do is get a shed.
I plan on making a custom one suitable for my needs. At the moment it is in the planning stages, but I have got a fairly good Idea of what I want to achieve.

The shed will be a basic functioning shed with the added extra of a built in greenhouse coming off the side.

More details will be posted later on this evening once I get a better mock up made.
