17.08.17 – Strawberrys for the planter tower

So after picking up the downpipes on Tuesday and cutting the holes into one of them, I decided to start potting up all the strawberry plants I have in the garden.

This is from just the ones randomly around the garden –

These where the ones with little to no root so have put them in water and am hoping for the best –

Tomorrow or Saturday will be the trough I was given by my aunt, I’ll pot the shoots first then go from there –

My neighbor is having a patio layed so when I seen this pallet on top I had to have it, it will make an excellent raised bed –

A big update!

First off, let me give my apologies for the lack of updates, but you know how it goes sometimes, other stuff get priority.

That doesn’t mean that I didn’t do any gardening though. I have done quite a bit.

Here is a picture of the grape vine before I split it up into three –

and here they are after I had finished –

Notice the potting bench in the above photo. That’s what all those planks got turned into, I’ll get a better picture tomorrow.

Now this is what I am the most happiest with, The raised bed.

From left to right – Sunflowers, Rainbow Chard, Rocket Salad and Rhubarb.

Ill get another update tonight ready for tomorrow.

Raised Bed – Part 6 – Set in and Rubble Clearance

I have now put the raised bed into the ground, it went in pretty easy, only moving the odd few over sized stones.

And it is looking good just need to clear all the rubble, glass and other debris to make it safe now, so a labour intensive job.
The sieving is going well though as I am about half way through, this is the amount of dirt I have cleared –

The bag is almost full to the brim, should be done by the weekend though. I’m only going down about a spade width, that should be more than plenty when full.

Also I only had one problem with the raised bed, the board is slightly twisted, so it pulled the screw out, nothing major though.

Tomorrow I will be testing out my new seeds using the dirt from the ground and bag, to see how it will grow.

My Grandparents Garden

To me the love for gardening probably started out from my grandparents. Both my parents see gardening as a pain so I didn’t get my love for it off them. My grandfather used to have his own allotments but due to him getting older, has had to give it up and grows mainly in the garden. Here are a few pictures from the garden –

He has gone a little bit tomatoe and runner bean mad, but as he says “only grow what you eat”. The sunflowers are all my grandmothers, she is the flower grower of them both.

I hope you have enjoyed this post on my grandparents garden.

Raised Bed – Part 4 – Nearing Completion

After having a lovely fathers day, with a lovely card and lots of presents, I didn’t plan to go out in the garden today but at 5:40pm, I had two choices. Stay in and watch Star Wars or pop out and carry on putting the raised bed together. I chose the raised bed.

After about an hour this is how the stands –

I also don’t need to find another plank either, the cut offs from the other planks, once connected together will be more than big enough for the missing section, so I am happy with that.

As promised yesterday, this is where the rubble from the raised bed area is going, down the gap in the fence, to try and fill up the hole between the gardens.

Also looking between the fence, I found this smaller fence, so at some point the current fence is coming off and I will re-attach them in a much better way, so that they are much tighter, leaving more garden free.

All in all, I am happy with the progress today, I love seeing things come together. Just got to continue sifting through the dirt and get hold of manure.

Raised Bed – Part 2

After another very bad start to the day, I thought the garden was off the cards today. To my great surprise, at about 2:00pm the sun came out for a visit, it even got warm too.

So here is how the area started off –

And after about 2 hours of digging this was the end result –

These are some of the larger stones I dug up from the raised bed section, quite surprised at what was down there in all honesty.

In all I took 3 buckets of rubble up to the recycling plant, as they where to small for me to use again.

There will be an area behind the raised bed that |I will block off from the dog and build up as an insectopia.

Tomorrow is going to involve me sieving the area to get rid of as much glass and slate as I can, don’t want a cut hand in the future. The wood for the raised beds are lined up and just waiting for my father to deliver them to me.

The only other thing for the bed then is manure, since the dirt is poor I need to find someone local to get it from, so that will be my aim for next week.

The Garden Transformation, Has Started.

Well what a finish to the day, raining when I started digging and sun when I finished.

For all that noticed I was posting on twitter today whilst out in the garden.

Before I started digging, I went to borrow some tools of my grandfather, the Wellington Boots he gave to me, they  took ages to clean out the little crawlers from inside though.

Here is the patch when I started –

And the end result –

Tilly in the trench.

All Tilly done was run through the mud, being a nuisance and generally getting in the way. But she is my little mascot.

Here is the bucket of worms I collected, as to save them from getting injured during the dig, I also have a suspicion that a previous owner has at some point demolished a shed and put it under the garden, as I found a lot of rubble, lots of broken glass and even some roof covers. I couldn’t really get the roof cover out though.

What I have gathered from todays dig, is that the ground is really sandy, so will incorporate manure into the ground and plant some green manure as soon as possible.

Once I dig out the next section and incorporated manure into the earth, I will be putting a raised bed around it and filling it in. My aim is to get it all ready for next year, since I was late starting this year. That doesn’t mean I won’t carry on growing though.

And while digging I found this –

Any help on what it is would be much appreciated.
